Bethany Mota, bullied teen performs on DWTS to Colbie Caillat’s hit “Try”

I love Bethany Mota’s story! As a teen she was bullied by those she thought were her friends. She began to believe the lies these “mean girls” told her, that she was ugly and not pretty enough. She found YouTube as a place to belong, to be heard. She began to make videos about hair, makeup, fashion, DIY projects, and things that she loved, and the rest is history! She has over 7 million subscribers and is on this seasons Dancing With The Stars.

Bethany gave background to her story before she danced to the song “Try” by Colbie Caillat, which by the way I love! “Try” is such an empowering song. As young girls and women, it’s so easy to find we are molding ourselves to look like someone else or act like someone else to find a way to belong. It may make us feel good in the moment or for a period of time, but as we give parts of ourselves away, we will find we are lacking something…and that something is the real us! I hope the lyrics speak to you, encourage you and give you the umph you need to just be YOU and LOVE WHO YOU ARE

Put your make up on
Get your nails done
Curl your hair
Run the extra mile
Keep it simple
So they like you, do they like you
Get your sexy on
Don’t be shy girl
Take it off
This is what you want to belong
So they like you, do you like you
You don’t have to try so hard
You don’t have to give it all away
You just have to get up, get up, get up
You don’t have change a single thing
You don’t have to try, try, try, try
You don’t have to try, try, try, try
You don’t have to try, try, try, try
You don’t have to try
You don’t have to try

Get your shopping on at the mall
Max your credit card
You don’t have to choos
Buy it all
So they like you
Do they like you
Wait a sec
You watch should you care what they think of you
When you’re all alone
By yourself, do you like you
Do you like you
You don’t have to try so hard
You don’t have to give it all away
You just have to get up, get up, get up
You don’t have change a single thing
You don’t have to try, try, try, try
You don’t have to try, try, try, try
You don’t have to try, try, try, try
You don’t have to try
You don’t have to try

You don’t have to try so hard
You don’t have to give it all away
You just have to get up, get up, get up
You don’t have change a single thing
You don’t have to try, try, try, try
You don’t have to try, try, try, try
You don’t have to try, try, try, try
You don’t have to try
Take your make up off
Let your hair down
Take a breath
Look into the mirror at yourself
Don’t you like you
Cause I like you

I enjoyed Bethany’s performance knowing what she has been through, and what she stands for. One of the things she said on her clip that I hope will speak to all you girls who feel ugly, and not worth much because that is what someone told you was this, “Looking back I wish I could tell myself, look what you’re going to be doing.” I’m sure never in a million years would she have thought she would do and become what she has.

Way to go Bethany! Thank you for giving girls who have been or are being bullied hope to know there is life on the other side of bullying, they just have to find their voice in something they do believe in.
