Think social media is harmless? Ask the loved ones of 9 teenagers who killed themselves this last year and they will beg to differ.
Have you heard of the social media site Ask.fm? It is a question platform site which gives people the opportunity to ask and answer controversial questions totally anonymously.
The answers can be either in text or video format, and users can also browse other people’s profiles with the option of submitting questions directly to them.
Anyone can anonymously ask a question and post remarks. Because it’s anonymous, it is the poster child for cyber bullying. The bullying is very real to the victim because most of the questions asked show the bully personally knows them.
Social media sites like Ask.fm, make it easy to tear someone down rather than build someone up.
And for the teenager whose very existence (from their perspective) is based upon social acceptance; once socially ruined, ostracized, or bullied, they find no reason to live. Instead they are choosing a permanent solution to a temporary problem and ending their life.
Bullying is serious. Cyber-bullying is serious. Help put a stop to bullying. Lives depend on it!
