What is The Thigh Gap you ask? It’s the space or gap between your inner thighs when you stand with your legs and knees together. So what’s the big deal? Tween and teen girls are going to great lengths—even starving themselves to try to achieve The Thigh Gap—which is short of impossible. Um, that’s a big problem.
Relationships and body image are probably two of the biggest indicators girls use to assess their value and self-worth. It’s also how they compare themselves with each other. So, this new and horribly dangerous rage is not only virtually impossible to achieve unless you are genetically born with one or undergo the knife to get one but girls are using The Thigh Gap to compare themselves to these “natural thigh gap-ers.” Taking things a step further, they’re not only comparing themselves to girls who have The Thigh Gap but judging girls who don’t. Both scenarios leave teen girls with warped body images and send the message, “you don’t measure up—you’re not good enough.”
What’s worse, popular social media sites are tools used in promoting and encouraging The Thigh Gap. On Twitter you will see many, #Thighgap and instagram is flooded with pictures of girls showing their Thigh Gap. All these images of girls parading their thigh gap gives the false impression—anyone can have one. What they don’t realize is the handful they are seeing are posted from around the world!
Relationships and body image are also two of the main weapons girl’s use against each other. The Thigh Gap is another weapon of mass destruction to self-esteem and body image. The way a girl looks often determines how they are treated and this new trend puts huge pressure on girls to look a certain way or risk losing their social status. Those girls already picked on for falling short of the status quo, now have one more weapon to be used against them.
Girls, your value and self-worth go far beyond a gap between your legs!
A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.
